Inca Quarry Trail

One Day Hike

Inca Quarry Trail Hike

This one day trek to Cachicata Inca Quarry is beautiful where visit some of the lesser-known places outside of busy Ollantaytambo – the last remaining “living Inca village”. This fabulous day hike offers a stunning view of the Urubamba mountain range and its Mt Veronica (5.860m/ 19,226ft), towering over the Sacred Valley.

The Inca quarry hike is a great warm-up trek and perfect for training for the Inca Trail! The Cachicata hike to the Inca Quarries begins in Ollantaytambo crossing the Urubamba River on the Inca-bridge, and where we observe how ancient Incan foundations still serve to this day for a modern structure to be laid across.

Inca Quarry Trail One Day Hike

The highlight of this day trek is the Gate of the Sun (3,900 m/ 12,795 ft) located on a hilltop, a unique place with a snowcapped mountain at the background and perfect to shoot amazing photos of the mountain through the gate. Ollantaytambo boasts some of the most amazing stonework in the whole Sacred Valley, and this trek takes you right to the source – the ancient Inca stone quarry! A place where the Incan stonecutters worked cutting, molding and shaping the rocks for the construction of the sun temple in Ollantaytambo, and some ancient burials with skeletons inside are still seen today.

Many parts of Sacred Valley are only now becoming open to the public and Inca Quarry trail is one of them. Even the locals were unaware of this great trail until a couple of years ago, as such, the area is still very much unexplored by tourists. The Cachicata hike to the Inca Quarries is a steep, 2.5-3h uphill hike. It’s a pretty challenging day hike, but the views of this impressive Andean peak and the Inca history that is brought to life make the effort well wort.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco | Ollantaytambo – Cachiccata – Inca Quarry – Cusco

Highlight of the Day: A day to trek to the Inca Quarry and Sungate.

Reaching the Gate of the Sun in the highlands of the Sacred Valley.

At 6:00 am, your Pacha Peru Explorers private guide comes at your hotel to pick you up, next, you will drive to the trailhead, which is located just close by to Ollantaytambo town at an elevation of 2,750 m/ 9,022 ft.

Once there, the day adventure starts, you will get into the trail, which is going up the mountainside until reaching the gate of the sun, as the trail is getting higher and higher it becomes harder and harder and the views become more and more impressive. After 2-hour hiking you will reach the Inca quarry zone, where the remains of cut rocks or carved rocks are still visible in the middle of shrubs, and the ancient burials are located in this area as well, once there you will explore the area with your private guide.

After this site, you will still hike up the mountain for 1 more hour to reach the Sungate (3,650 m/ 11,972 ft). Sungate is nestled on a hilltop whose door overlooks to the Veronica mountain (Wakaywillka Mt). The area is not properly researched yet, although it believed that the site was built to worship the gods of the mountain especially the veronica mountain and the sun god. Today, it is still visible some remains of water canals, walls, and Inca Trails. The highlight of this hike is the view of Veronica mountain through the gate of the sun, a great opportunity to shoot a perfect Peru postcard.

About midday we will take our packed lunch at a scenic spot with awesome vistas around. After exploring the area properly, we will return by the same trail to the trailhead, from where will take our private transportation to your hotel or other location.

We want to make your trip to Peru as memorable and as carefree as possible. In this section, you’ll find the answers to all the questions you have about traveling with Pacha Peru Explorers in one place. Please read the following information carefully – it will help you with any questions about our services.

Briefing or Informative Meeting

All information meetings and briefings are held in your hotel at 5:00 pm, one night before the tour begins. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re unable to attend, you must coordinate another time by email, by phone or at the Pacha Peru Explorers office.

Can I store luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office (you can organize it with us on the briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any equipment that you won’t need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags; put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing everything). It’s best to put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Pick up of guests

Please Note:

  • All pickups are within Cusco City, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center for its convenient location.
  • Our guide or staff will confirm the pickup time the day before the tour.
  • Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes.
  • Cusco is an old city and has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets without car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. For such reasons, we strongly advise you to book accommodation with good access.

Group Tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people, then physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route.

It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, the guide will be the one who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications are possible.

Strikes and demostrations

Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru, and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked, and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your trip as originally planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date.

Under these circumstances, tours may also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, everything will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority, and our decisions will be made to protect it.
