Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco | Tipón – Pikillacta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco

Highlight of the Day: Enjoy 3 cultures from different times in one tour.

Marvel at the beauty of America’s Sistine Chapel.

Our transportation and guide will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 AM, and we’ll embark on a 40-minute journey southwest of Cusco.

Our tour begins with a visit to Tipón, part of the Qhapaq Ñan route, located 25 km from Cusco. The archaeological site of Tipón, also known as the ‘Temple of Water,’ features a complex of agricultural terraces, long staircases, and stone-carved water channels. It showcases remarkable hydraulic engineering that astonishes both locals and visitors, attracting some of the world’s top scientists each year.

Its thirteen terraces are surrounded by perfectly polished stone walls. One of its main attractions is the royal complex; Tipón was a grand sanctuary where water worship took place.

Next, we will visit the Archaeological Center of Pikillaqta, located 30 km southwest of Cusco. Pikillaqta is considered one of the most famous and well-preserved Pre-Inca cities of the Wari culture, covering an area of approximately 50 hectares. The word ‘Pikillaqta’ comes from two Quechua words: piki (small or flea) and llaqta (village), which translates to ‘Small Village’ or ‘Village of Fleas.’ With our guide’s assistance, you’ll explore and appreciate the Pre-Inca stone walls of one of the Wari culture’s most significant cities, known for its well-planned and organized streets.

As the final stop, we will visit the traditional town of Andahuaylillas, located 36 km from Cusco. Andahuaylillas is part of the Andean Baroque route, and we’ll explore its incredible chapel, the Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas, also known as the Sistine Chapel of America, due to its beautiful wooden works, exquisite paintings, and colonial decorations that span from floor to ceiling. This highlights the artistry of the Cusqueños and creates a powerful visual impact within. One of the unique features of this temple is that its baptistry contains an arch with the inscription ‘I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen,’ written in Latin, Spanish, Quechua, Aymara, and Puquina.

Finally, we will return to Cusco, concluding the tour at approximately 2:00 PM.

Can I store luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office (you can organize it with us on the briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any equipment that you won’t need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags; put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing everything). It’s best to put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Pick up of guests

Please Note:

  • All pickups are within Cusco City, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center for its convenient location.
  • Our guide or staff will confirm the pickup time the day before the tour.
  • Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes.
  • Cusco is an old city and has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets without car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. For such reasons, we strongly advise you to book accommodation with good access.
